FAQs

Do I need a license to rent a boat?

If you want to rent a bareboat (without a skipper), you’ll need a valid sailing license. If you’re unsure whether your license is accepted, feel free to contact us for clarification.
We can also provide you with an expert crew who knows this coastline like the back of their hand—guiding you to the most breathtaking spots and hidden gems.

What types of boats are available? What are the options?

Portiate offers a variety of vessels, including sailing monohulls, catamarans, and motorboats. These are available for both skippered and bareboat charters, depending on your qualifications and preferences. We offer both daily trips and longer charters.

What if I have a special request or plan for my trip?

We encourage you to share your ideas and preferences with us so we can tailor your sailing experience. We offer customized options for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, marriage proposals, and corporate events.

Can I bring my own food and drinks on board?

Yes! While we offer a range of catering options upon request to elevate your experience, you’re also welcome to bring your own food and drinks for a more personal touch.

What happens in case of bad weather?

If weather conditions are unsafe for sailing, we’ll work with you to reschedule your trip or offer alternative solutions. In extreme cases where rescheduling isn’t possible, we will discuss our refund policies with you.

How do I make a reservation?

You can make a reservation directly through our website by filling out the contact form with your details. Alternatively, feel free to contact us by email at bookings@portiate.com or by phone/WhatsApp at (+351) 968 995 805. A 50% booking fee payment link will be sent to you. The remaining balance is to be paid at check in on

the day of your trip in cash, credit or debit card.

Are there age restrictions for passengers?

There are no strict age restrictions. However, for elderly passengers, babies, or pregnant women, we may recommend the best times to sail based on sea conditions. Everyone is welcome, and we’re happy to take extra precautions when needed. If you have any concerns, just let us know—we’re here to help!

Guests Taking part in actual sailing

Mostly on Sailing and Catamaran Cruises we allow guests to take part in the actual sailing and maneuvering of the yachts if they wish to do so.

Weather / Wind / Cancelations

In the Algarve, the weather is almost always sunny with very little wind until around 1 p.m., making mornings ideal for visiting caves on a Luxury Motorboat Cruise. In the afternoon, you can anchor in a bay and enjoy swimming in calm waters.

Generally, the wind picks up in the afternoon. So, if you'd like to explore the cliffs and also enjoy sailing, a Private Sailing Trip – Full Day or a Luxury Catamaran Cruise – Full Day is the best option.

In the rare event of a southwesterly wind (Levante) bringing in a swell, Motorboat Trips are usually canceled and the full amount of the booking is refunded. For Sailing and Catamaran Cruises, we typically choose to anchor in Alvor Bay, where the sea remains flat and it's still a beautiful spot to enjoy the day onboard.

If it’s raining, all trips are canceled and guests receive a full refund.
